ProList would like to congratulate our English Literacy students on successfully completing our English improvement courses held by the Literacy Council of Frederick County a few months back.
About a year ago our Director of Operations, David Mawyer, had come up with a great idea to offer English literacy classes to our production employees, "At ProList we have a lot of Spanish speaking employees, and we took a poll to gauge if there would be any interest in learning/improving their English language. There was a lot of interest! So we partnered with Kim Brown and the Literacy Council of Frederick County to establish ongoing classes."
The sessions were scheduled for 3 hours a week and broken up into two separate classes. At first, classes were held here at ProList with the instructor being remote during COVID. After the lift on COVID regulations, the instructors were then able to hold in person sessions 3 times a week. Upon finishing the first sessions, we later opted for longer classes and changed the reoccurrence to two times per week.
Since all attendees volunteered to join the class, it showed greatly their desire to improve their language learning, "This was key because it showed that many of our employees wanted to take the time and improve their English language skills." says Dave Mawyer. According to some of the students, these course benefits have been helpful not only at work but also in their everyday lives. Sujatha Jagadeesan, ProList's Human Resources officer, also mentioned seeing a tremendous amount of growth within the attendees, "I have seen very good improvement in their speaking skills. The students have not only learned better communication skills in English but also confidence in themselves."
Although we paused the next round of classes after the last session was finished, in anticipation of our fall busy season, "We would like to continue offering our employees English language course in some form or another going into the new year." says Mawyer. Jagadeesan also agreed, "We are look forward to renew our relationship with the Literacy Council of Frederick County and continue English classes for our staff once we get through our busy period."
A huge thank you to Kim Brown, Workplace Literacy Coordinator, at Literacy Council of Frederick County, David Mawyer and Sujatha Jagadeesan. for this amazing opportunity for our staff to further their language capabilities. We cannot wait to see what the future holds!
